Point of law

It is not often that a fledgling Brisbane law firm tops the big boys.

But only a year since opening their doors, the legal eagles at Talbot Sayer are popping the champagne corks after beating top-tier firms across Australia and New Zealand in the lucrative mergers and acquisitions business.

Talbot Sayer topped the Thomson Reuters M&A league tables for deals up to $50 million in the first quarter of 2015.

They also placed equal first with Allens Linklaters and Herbert Smith Freehills in the league tables for deals up to $500 million over the same period. The total value of the 11 deals advised on by the firm was $101.85 million.

Partners Oliver Talbot and Tim Sayer have a background in big law firms but hung up their own shingle after deciding things could be done better at the boutique end of the market.

The firm has acted on a number of public company takeovers for clients including Firewire Surfboards and Guildford Coal.
